Cafe Silverstre is the best for homemade style Mexican food. The three chile verde burritos - smothered with cheese and onions is the best - $10 dollars. It will feed you for two days. Salsa and the fresh guacamole are recommended as starters. Silverstre has several beers on draft and a selection of bottles. It is great for a moderately priced night out with the boys. I would not recommend the "taco salad" that is not on the menu - keep your selections on the menu, and you cannot beat the home made authentic Mexican feel.

This location is old but clean, the staff was friendly and on top of things and the prices are very reasonable. When it comes to the food it was OK. but not special. I had the Chile Verde smothered burrito and the pork was cut up into tiny bits without much flavor. I did like the big thick homemade flour tortilla they wrapped up the burrito in.

Great food and friendly service. I eat here often and I'm always impressed with their consistency. It's a good neighborhood place. Tonight I ordered the posole and it was delicious. Our server was friendly and efficient. My favorite dish is the chile colorado platter but I think the posole is becoming my new favorite. It's somewhat new to their menu.

Recently moved here from LA and have been disappointed in most Mexican places.... Until I came here. Delicious, affordable, authentic, and great service.

This has been a family favorite for years! I love the fresh chips they serve with salsa. The chile verde is my favorite by far. The service is always great, run by a great group of people dedicated to providing a great meal at an affordable price.

Had lunch here today for the first time and I loved it. I think this place is a hidden gem. It's not easy to find homemade authentic mexican food in SLC, but you can at Cafe Silvestre. I'll be back soon!

The quality has gone down over the years, which is sad because we'd been going here for years to get my spanish rice fix. The Mexican ribs are really good.

I have been driving by these places all the time throughout the valley for years. And I finally decided to stop in and give it a try. It is just good over cheesed Mexican food. If you are looking for authentic this is not the place. But if you feel like getting really full on comfort food? This is definitely place to eat. Oh yeah and it doesn't hurt that they have 6 dollar pitchers of PBR pitchers.

Buddy and I stopped here for lunch. I've just moved back to SLC and I've been visiting some old haunts. My chile verde was good, the price was very low and the service was friendly. I'm glad this place is still around.

A sweet, little, vibrant, older lady who stood a mighty 4 feet 10 inches greeted us on her way out. Staring first at my elbow, which was eye level, then delightfully into my eyes, she proclaimed it the best, most authentic Mexican food around. I suppose she should be commended for not being at Perkins at 4:00 for a late dinner, but a reliable source of culinary quality she was not. Salsa is the consistency of marinara sauce, and taste like it too. Put cheese on anything and it's edible, but just barely here. Combination plate is lots of "food" but the size has nothing to do with one's struggle to finish it. It is next to 2 other Mexican restaurants and we were hungry and went to the one with the shortest wait. My mistake is your fair warning.

As far as service, my server was very friendly. She also filled my water promptly whenever I needed a refill. This is the only thing keeping me from giving just one star to this place. The issue with this place for me was the food itself. For a full-service Mexican restaurant, I found the menu lacking a lot of dishes that other comparable restaurants would serve. I was hoping to have a chile rellano, but that wasn't on the menu. I opted for the enchilada plate with the rice and beans. The enchiladas were pretty bland. The shredded beef inside had a strange taste to my buds. The refried beans were a little drier than I would have liked. The rice was just "ok". All-in-all, I wish I would have gone to another place to eat. But, it was Sunday, and it's Salt Lake City.

Same as La Frontera as far as gooey, big plates of greasy food. Only drawback here is they charge for chips and salsa and the salsa is like a picante dip not diced vegetables.

Basic Mexican with friendly service. When we went they had a margarita special that was solid.

Don't look at the building, cuz you might get scared. But fortunately, the service was not scary. I had the cheese enchiladas which were pretty good. My girlfriend had a chicken soft taco which was huge, but was bland (plain chicken, cheese, tomatoes and lettuce with absolutely no seasoning of any kind -- no marinade, sauce, etc.). She had to doctor it up with lots of ranch dressing. The chips, salsa and guacamole were great, and the atmosphere was friendly. My pepsi glass never saw a dry bottom, and my girlfriends water glass was filled to the brim at all times!!! So if you're looking for friendly service and mediocre food, visit real soon.

You know... I actually thought this place was alright! Is it the best and/or most authentic Mexican I have ever had? No. Did it hit the spot after drinking beer in the sun all day, too lazy to cook dinner, and needed somewhere within walking distance to my house (you know, the beers... no cars allowed)? Absolutely! A group of us went in on Saturday evening. I ordered the smothered burrito, and it was massive (and cheap). I don't know if you can really mess up beans, cheese, wrap-in-tortilla, top-with-sauce-and-pork, it was good and so I was happy! And, they have beer! So, continuing with the theme of the day, I paired said burrito with a Pacifico. So, if you are looking to go somewhere where you can leave full, drunk (if that is your thing), and spend like, nothing, this is a good option!

This place pretty much sucks. The food is very bland. The rice looks like it was blended up after it was cooked - very mushy. The beans were okay. The chips were very good. The burrito i got was just too bland and way too expensive for what they give you. My brother got a large meal that had tacos and some smaller burritos on it..I think they were microwavable burritos..not sure. Someone said that this place feels very authentic. It feels more like a low quality family owned restaurant that happens to serve poor mexican food. Nothing really mexican about the place. Doesn't feel like a dive, just feels sub-par. Oh yeah...go half a block west and you will find much better mexican food at Molca Salsa.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
